Bird Nesting Season Is Here
Thursday 05/03/2026
Nesting Season Incoming
Nesting season has begun, and birds are searching for warm, sheltered places to settle. Roofs, ledges, signage, gutters, warehouses, and especially solar panels are prime targets.
If a space is elevated, protected, and out of reach, birds will find it attractive.
What many property owners don’t realise is that once birds begin nesting, your options become very limited.
Under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to disturb or remove an active nest containing eggs or chicks.
This means you cannot remove the nest or disturb the birds. In many cases, you may have to wait weeks or even months until the nest is no longer active, and the problem may worsen during that time.
This is why early prevention is essential.
What Happens If Birds Nest on Your Building?
Although birds are a natural part of the environment, nesting on residential or commercial buildings can lead to costly problems.
🚧 Structural & Maintenance Issues
Bird nests can block gutters, causing overflowing water and potential damage to the building. Nesting debris can also accumulate under solar panels, creating maintenance issues. In addition, dry nesting materials can increase fire risks, while acidic droppings may cause corrosion on building surfaces.
☀️ Solar Panel Damage
Solar panels provide warmth and protection from predators, making them ideal nesting areas. When birds nest beneath panels, debris can reduce efficiency, damage wiring, cause overheating, and eventually lead to expensive repairs or replacement.
🔊 Noise & Hygiene Concerns
Bird infestations often cause persistent early-morning noise and leave droppings on buildings, walkways, and vehicles. Bird guano can also create hygiene concerns. Once birds establish a nesting site, they often return to the same location year after year.
How Bird Proofing Solutions Work
Effective bird control focuses on prevention rather than harm. Several solutions can discourage birds from nesting on buildings.
👀 Visual Bird Deterrents
Visual deterrents make birds feel unsafe by introducing movement or predator cues. Examples include reflective devices, predator decoys such as owls or hawks, and flashing or moving objects. These deterrents are best suited to areas with light bird pressure or as temporary protection.
🔩 Bird Spikes
Bird spikes prevent birds from landing without harming them. They are commonly installed on ledges, signs, beams, and roof edges where birds like to perch. By removing comfortable landing space, they are particularly effective against pigeons and other larger urban birds.
🕸️ Bird Netting
Bird netting creates a physical barrier that blocks birds from accessing specific areas. It is commonly used to protect roof voids, courtyards, warehouses, and the space beneath solar panels. Durable, discreet netting is widely considered one of the most effective long-term bird-proofing solutions.
🔊 Bio-Acoustic Systems
Bio-acoustic systems use recorded bird distress calls and predator sounds to create an environment birds perceive as unsafe. These signals encourage birds to relocate and are particularly effective in large spaces such as farms, distribution centres, commercial sites, and airfields.
Prevention Is Easier Than Removal
Once birds begin nesting, legal protections can leave property owners dealing with disruption for months.
Early prevention helps protect your building, your solar investment, your maintenance budget, and your peace of mind.
