Flat Roofs & Dormer Roofs
Flat roofs & dormer roofs of all kinds are a major attraction to pest birds offering them freedom to perch roost and nest at height away from predators with an all-round view of approaching threats.
Which Species ca cause problems?
Predominantly Seagulls (Herring Gulls and Black-Backed Gulls particularly), but also Feral Pigeons and Crows.
What are the problems?
Noise transfer through the roof into the living/working space below.
Damage to the roof membrane and other roofing materials from the birds pecking at them.
Damp patches forming where nest sites deteriorate into a peaty substance that attracts vegetation growth and retains moisture.
Blocked gutters from an accumulation of nest site debris, feathers and bird droppings gathering in them.
Attacks on people by seagulls using the roof as a nest site and enabling them to swoop down on people from above using the roof as a launch point.
How can I stop the problem?
There are only four main ways in which this problem can be dealt with and these can be split into two categories.
1) Solutions for when the birds are only roosting or perching (light to medium pressure) and there is no food source nearby.
Daddi-Long-Legs
Bio-Acoustic Deterrents
Ultrasonic Deterrents
If there is evidence of any nesting, current or previous, do not use the solutions above and resort to category 2 below
2) Solutions where the birds are already nesting (heavy pressure) require a 100% guaranteed way of moving pest birds off a flat roof as they will be extremely determined to get back on the roof next nesting season if they have already built a nest on your roof.
