Industrial roofs offer seagulls vast expanses of open roof on which they can nest and raise there young in absolute safety at height away from predators.

Most industrial roofs have protrusions such as vents and skylights, behind which the gulls can build a substantial nest.

Which species can cause problems?

What are the problems?

• Gulls can pull away roofing materials such as insulation to form nests causing damage.
• Nest materials, food debris and feathers can block the roof’s drainage systems causing leaks and floods.
• Old nests deteriorate into a peat-like substance from which vegetation can grow, damaging roof sheets and blocking gutters.
• Gulls can peck holes in fragile roof lights whilst opening shell fish by hammering them with their beaks on the roof’s surface.
• The roof will be aggressively defended against human access during the nesting season causing access problems.
• Lice, ticks, mites and maggots associated with the infestation can find their way inside the building affecting the occupiers.

How can I stop the problem?

On large surface area roofs there are five main solutions depending upon the severity of the infestation:

Light pressure, perching only no food source present

• Bio-Acoustic Bird Scarers
  Use Bio-Acoustic Deterrents to scare birds away from courtyards, atriums and light wells using their own natural distress calls.

Medium pressure, where the birds are either perching or roosting

• Laser Bird Deterrents
  The Agrilaser Autonomic is a highly effective bird deterrent well suited for use on industrial roofs.

Heavy pressure, where the birds are nesting and/or there is a food source present

• Bird Netting
  Bird Control Netting is the best solution for heavy infestations. Installed at the highest possible point above all perch points to seal off the problem area.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Use an avian disinfectant such as PX Ornikill or Guanaway to neutralise bird droppings prior to clearing them to avoid contraction of one of 30 known diseases in bird droppings.
